Gerard Vaughan

Prof. Gerard Vaughan has recently retired as the Director/CEO of the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia's pre-eminent art museum. During his tenure as director he worked closely with the curatorial staff to enhance the holdings ofAsian art, and as a part ofit's major redevelopment of 1999-2003 the NGV tripled the size ofits Asian galleries; a further reorganization of the Asian galleries has just been completed. Before returning to his native Melbourne in 1999, Prof. Vaughan was Director/CEO of the British Museum Development Trust in London, and previously held a number of senior appointments at Oxford University, where he took his doctorate. He specializes in the history of taste and collecting, particularly in 18th and 19th century Europe. He is currently a Professorial Fellow of the Australian Institute ofArt History at the University of Melboume.
 

Collecting and Exhibiting Chinese Art in Melbourne:

An historical perspective, and challenges for the future

The paper will give an overview of how both public art museums and private collectors have acquired Chinese art,and built up specialist collections. It will concentrate on the National Gallery of Victoria, which arguably has the best collection in Australia, and will examine both the acquisition of historical material, and the challenge of how to address the complex issue ofbuilding a coherent and credible collection of contemporary Chinese artistic practice.
