Welcome speech for the 7th' International Symposium on Chinese Culture

I would like to begin by acknowledging the Wurrundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, the traditional owners of the land on which we hold this meeting today, to pay my respects to their elders, past and present, and thank them for their care of the land.

La Trobe University is extremely honoured and proud to be the co-organiser of the 7" Intemational Symposium of the World Forum on Chinese Culture in the 21st Century, with the Association for Yan Huang Culture of China and the Global Arts and Culture Society in Singapore. We have been very much looking forward to this event, which is being held for the first time in Australia. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners for their co-operation and help in the organisation ofthe event, and to particularly thank the conference sponsor, Innovation Fund Limited.

It is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the city of Melbourne, which was again voted the most liveable city in the world in 2012. Hopefully you will enjoy your stay here during this pleasant season. Can I particularly welcome all of the scholars who have travelled to Melbourne from China and other countries.I am sure that this will be a memorable and valuable visit for all.

This year, 2012, marks the 40th anniversary of China-Australia diplomatic relations and so it appropriate that the conference is held in this multi-cultural country. I am confident that the conference will contribute to the enhancement of mutual understanding and closer ties between our nations. The conference also provides an opportunity for policy makers, academics and professionals in the area of cross cultural engagement and the arts and humanities to come together to share and exchange ideas, experiences and knowledge.

La Trobe University is one of Australia's leading institutions. In its 45 years of existence, the University has established an excellent reputation for world class research and vibrant and contemporary teaching. La Trobe is ranked in the top five hundred universities in the world and has been since the rankings commenced. It is also ranked in the top 50 universities in the world under 50 years old.

It is appropriate that La Trobe is co-organiser of this conference. We have had a long association with China and have established a wide range of successful collaborations with leading universities in China.

The Centre for China Studies was established in 2007 as a joint centre in conjunction with Peking University and Beijing Foreign Studies University. It was the first such joint centre established in Australia and is recognized as aleading centre of collaboration between China and Australia. Its highly successful student exchange program has had a profound effect on a large number of young people from China and Australia.

In 2011 the China Centre was enhanced by the establishment, with the support of Hanban, of the La Trobe University Confucius Institute jointly with Chongqing University. Our Confucius Institute focuses on promoting Chinese language and culture in Melboume's north and regional Victoria. The Institute aims to provide a better understanding of China for La Trobe University staff and students and the local community and is well on the way to achieving this goal.

Finally, can I thank Professor Pei Likun, Director of the Centre for China Studies and the La Trobe University Confucius Institute, along with Ms Lisa Hasker, Senior Manager, University Events and Engagement and staff of the China Centre, for all of their work in bringing this conference to fruition.They have worked diligently and hard over the past months and I thank them for their dedication.

Can I once again welcome everyone to the conference and to Melboume.I am confident that the conference will result in new knowledge and understanding and new collaboration for the benefit of all ofus.

能够与中华炎黄文化研究会、新加坡炎黄国际文化协会一起作为21世纪中华文化世界论坛第七届国际学术研讨会的主办方，拉筹伯大学感到非常荣幸和自豪。我们一直期待这一时刻的来临，在澳大利亚是第一次举办这种会议。我想借这个机会感谢我们的合作伙伴为主办这次会议所进行的合作和帮助，尤其要感谢会议的赞助单位创新基金。

John Rosenberg

Professor John Rosenberg, PhD (Computer Science) (Monash), BSc (Hons)(Computer Science), Monash, FTSE, FACS, FAICD Professor John Rosenberg commenced as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Intemational and Future Students) at La Trobe University in August, 2009 and is currently Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President at La Trobe. He holds the Honours degree of Bachelor of Science and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in computer science from Monash University, and is a Fellow of the Academy for Technological Sciences and Engineering, the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Australian Computer Society.

Previously, Professor Rosenberg was Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Deakin University for six years and Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University for six years. Prior to this he held appointments at the University of Newcastle and the University of Sydney, and was a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.

Professor Rosenberg is a distinguished academic, is widely published, and continues to be active in significant govemment working parties and committees.
One of his major areas of expertise is information technology, both from aninfrastructure point of view and in terms of the use of technology in the delivery of educational programs.

At La Trobe University, Professor Rosenberg is responsible for the internationalisation agenda, including international student recruitment, student mobility and internationalising the student experience, and marketing and engagement, including domestic student recruitment, brand management, corporate marketing,

sponsorship and events. Professor Rosenberg also has responsibility for the development and management of educational partnerships both within Australia and internationally, including the La Trobe Melbourne pathway college which operates in conjunction with Navitas Pty Ltd. He is Chair of theLa Trobe University Confucius Institute and a member of the Board of the Centre for China Studies.
