AfterPenangwascolonizedbytheBritishin1786,itbecameanimportantimmigrationportforimmigrantsfromvariouspartsoftheworldespeciallythosefromSouthChina.ThedevelopmentbyPenangfounderBritishCaptainFrancisLighthadresultedinfluxofChineseworkershere.

Beinganislandofstrategicimportance,Penangwassoondevelopedintoafreeport.Notonlywastheeconomythriving,butitalsoattractedimmigrantsfromChinaandIndia.WiththeChineseandIndianscoupledwithnativeMalayfromPeninsularMalaysiaandIndonesianfromSumatra,Penanggraduallyevolvedintoamultiracialcity.
TherewasanincreaseintheChineseimmigrantsafterSingaporewasfoundedin1819.ThevolumesawasurgewhenBritishgroupedPenang,Singapore,MalaccaandformedStraitsSettlementsin1826.In1840,BritishinitiatedtheOpiumWar.ItwasthroughMalaccaStraitsthattheirfleetofbattleshiptravelledthroughandsetashoreatChina.
NotonlydidtheBritishforcedChinatoopenupportsforinternationaltrade,butalsoimportedopiumintoChinathatcorruptedthepeople.ThewarledtoBritishvictoriesoverChinaandresultedcessionofHongKongtotheUnitedKingdomviatheenactmentoftheTreatyofNankingin1842.

TheendofOpiumWarsparkedanupsurgeofChineseimmigrationwhentheBritishdisplacedbatchesofChinesethroughoutnumerouscontinentsviaHongKong.PenangasanearlysettlementplaceforChineseimmigrantsisdeemedtohaveunveiledthefirstchapterofthehistoryofoverseasChinese.

现任韩江学院名誉院长；韩江电视新闻中心社长；韩江三校董事会总务。马来西亚客联会署理主席；槟城中华总商会慈善基金。

2009年获得中华十大财智人物突出贡献奖。以经营中药保健品起家，成就一代著名儒商；创设“韩江三校”，建立海外华文教育完整体系。谢诗坚是财智双全的华商代表，是拓展华文教育、传承中华文化的时代典范。

同年，也获得由台湾行政院客委会遴选20名东南亚客家精英其中一人。马来西亚共有七人上榜。

槟城华人两百年——写下海外华人史第一页

本文主要提出马来西亚的槟城州在1786年被英国占有后，意外地成为华人大批南来的桥头堡。通过英人莱特（CaptainFrancisLight，1740-1794）的开拓，才引进中国的华工。

由于是个海岛，槟城很快发展成为自由港，不但繁荣了地方经济，而且吸引成千上万的中国人及印度人，再加上来自马来半岛的马来人及苏岛的印尼人，终于把槟城打造成多元种族的城市。

伴随着新加坡在1819年的开埠，更多的华人飘洋过海；尤其是1826年英国将槟城、新加坡及马六甲组成“海峡殖民地”后，更利用马六甲海峡把英国的战舰开向中国，引爆了1840年的鸦片战争。

英国不但强迫中国打开通商门户，也把大量鸦片运往中国荼毒人民，并在1842年将香港据为殖民地。

自此之后，英国通过香港将一批又一批的华人送往海外，启开了华人移民潮的第一波。因此我们将槟城列为海外华人落脚的发祥地，也写下了海外华人史的第一章。
