Eco-civilization :

where ancient tradition meets twenty-first century design

In China, Dao is understood as the Way of nature, the way that natural systems unfold when left to their own devices. But can civilization also rest on Dao? Can Dao inform and shape the unfolding of civilization? And will a civilization that consciously follows Dao in its basic design and procedural principles be an ecologically sensitive and sustainable one? In this paper I argue that biomimicry, as a contemporary theory of design, can serve as a vehicle for Daoism in the twenty-first century: Daoism, in particular the Laoist notion of wu wei, offers a powerful philosophical lens for interpreting biomimicry. Such a Laoist reading, which adds much needed philosophical depth to the notion of biomimicry, affords Daoism a central role in current debates about sustainability and the outlines of a sustainable civilization. At the same time, the global state of environmental crisis that has elicited biomimicry as a design response provides a paradigm-shifting new context in which Daoists can in tum interrogate their tradition, thereby deepening and enhancing its relevance for the present era.
